Who He Is
Born in 1927 in the United State, Kohlberg spent a lot of his time researching moral development by conducting a variety of interviews. In 1987, he commited suicide in the Boston Harbor.
Importance to Human Development and Education
With his research he saw a pattern in people's stage of development and their age. That being said, from Kohlberg we learn that children have different drives behind their decisions when it come to conflict. By knowing this, we are able to gather a better understanding on why a child may say or do the things that they do.
Theories or Famous Experiments
Kohlberg is most famous for his work with moral development. His three stages of moral development include Preconventional, Conventional, and Postconventional. Look at the chart below for a better understanding of each stage. Going hand and hand with moral development, Kohlberg is a also known for working with the Heinz Dilemma. Through the dilemma, he was able to tell what stage of moral development someone was in according to their answer. *Prevconventional Moral Judgement- moral reasoning that is marked by self-interest and motivation based on reward and punishments. (Levine & Munsch 409)
*Conventional Moral Judgement- moral reasoning that moves beyond self-interest to take into account the good of others. (Levine & Munsch 409)
* Postconventional Moral Judgement- independently formed moral judgments that are based on universal principles that apply to all people (moves past the society as a defining factor and focuses on what is right and/or moral) (Levine & Munsch 410)
